The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has detected the presence of Cyclamate (as Cyclamic Acid) in YTY Garlic Peanuts. SFA has directed the importer, Yan Tai Yit Pte Ltd, to recall the implicated products. The recall is ongoing.
Cyclamate is a permitted food additive that is used as artificial sweeteners and is approved for use in certain food products (e.g. soft drinks and canned fruits). However, the use of cyclamate is currently not allowed in walnuts as well as other nuts and seeds products.
While there are no immediate health risks from consuming walnuts and other nuts and seeds products found to contain cyclamate, prolonged excessive consumption of the sweetener should be avoided.
Nonetheless, SFA is taking a precautionary approach, and is currently conducting proactive sampling and testing of nuts and seeds products in Singapore. SFA will initiate recalls of the affected products that were detected to contain non-permitted sweeteners (e.g., cyclamate).
Consumers who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase for enquiries.
